Welcome To The Blog
What’s it all about?
Right… my first blog post. And I’ve been sat in front of my laptop for a pretty long time trying to decide what to write first. There are loads of topics and things I’d like to share but it would probably make more sense to introduce it (and me) first.
So I decided to make it a bit of an introduction about the blog itself and what’s to come, so you get an idea of the sort of person who’s going to be writing these things, what I’m likely to be writing about and, most importantly, what’s in it for you! Hopefully it will help some of you decide that you have no interest in following these posts and have far better things to do with your time, whereas others will stick around for a bit and see what’s to come.
Who am I?
Some basics first: my name’s Tom, I’m a 36 year-old guy who lives with his dog near Winchester in the South of England. (I sound like I’m writing an online dating profile now!)
I have quite a varied background having originally studied Psychology and then running a business (a dating agency!) for many years. After that I spent my working life teaching in primary schools and in school leadership. The one thing tying them all together was a fascination with people and wanting to help others.
On a personal note I love running (albeit slowly!), watching baking programs (and occasionally trying my hand at some of the recipes), I’m a bit of a sci-fi and superhero geek and enjoy travelling … So you may well find the occasional reference to these things appearing in the blog. You’ll also find my love of music coming in very often. I have a thing about song lyrics so blogs will often be titled around or contain song lyrics in one form or another. Which does mean you’ll be slowly discovering my taste in music. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
What will the blog be about?
This blog (and please get in touch if you can think of a great title!) is focussed mainly on Stress, Anxiety and Wellbeing. Basically getting more out of your life.
As part of this I’ll be sharing stories (anonymously and with their permission of course!) of people I’ve worked with, my own experiences and ideas, resources and techniques from the various methods I use: such as Psychology, Mindfulness, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and Clinical Hypnotherapy (if any of those make you think “Oh, I’m not too sure now!” Give me a chance, I probably felt the same way not that long ago).
Why am I blogging?
I’m starting this blog as a way of being able to connect with and help more people who have been in similar situations to me and my clients. And even as I write that I’m aware of how cheesy it sounds. But it’s true, so if you can think of a better way of wording it please let me know!
I love working with my clients but there’s a limit to how many people I can connect with each week. And I’ve been in that situation many times where I’ve had the challenges and problems my clients do and wish I’d known what I do now.
I’ve always wanted to be in a career where I feel like I’m making a difference to people. Hence the dating agency (helping people either meet a partner or realising they’re happy being single), being a teacher (making a difference with children and coaching new teachers), and now putting those various skills together with both old and new training to help people in a way that means a lot to me personally. I say that because a lot of the things I help people with are things I’ve had to overcome or deal with in the past, such as stress and anxiety, low self-confidence etc.
So I’m hoping that people who are dealing with similar things will be able to find useful ideas here, read stories about other people’s experiences and find ways of helping make their lives better.
And please do get involved. I welcome comments, feedback, shared experiences, agreements, disagreements, other viewpoints. It’s all really helpful for me and for others. So go ahead and comment, or email me (email@example.com). I really do appreciate any time people put into responding.
I’m also on the look out for people who want to contribute by writing about their own experiences as part of the blog itself, so do get in contact if that sounds like you!
I’d love for this blog to become one that genuinely does make a difference- to see it grow into something where readers are sharing their own experiences and discussions are happening in the comments and there are stories of real change and growth going on. If you’re still reading this, I’d love for you to be a part of that.
One of the next posts will be focussed on the topic of Mindfulness, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. So if you have any experiences, questions or thoughts you’d like to add to this, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
